He was tucking the sides around her legs when he felt her move. Freezing in place, he glanced at her face.

Her eyelashes fluttered, but remained closed. She moaned and lifted a hand to her head.

Shane leaned over her, gently pulling her hand away from the injury. "Can you hear me?" He kept his voice low, figuring she must have one hell of a headache.

Served her right for being foolish enough to travel in this storm.

Her thick, dark lashes fluttered again, but this time she managed to keep them open for a few seconds—long enough for Shane to note that her eyes were such a deep blue they appeared almost purple. She quickly closed them again, as if the light hurt her eyes.

"I...hear you. My head hurts." She turned her head slightly, then moaned in pain. "What's that noise?"

Shane lifted his head. "Buck! Quiet!"

Buck immediately stopped his barking, then began to lick the baby's face. She continued to giggle, clutching his fur and pulling with all her might. Shane watched a moment to make certain Buck would tolerate this innocent abuse. When he was satisfied that Buck was a marshmallow in her hands, he looked back at the woman.

A frowned wrinkled the skin between her brows.

"I'll get you some aspirin," he said, getting to his feet.

What more could he do? Keep her quiet and warm...she probably suffered a concussion. Hopefully, by tomorrow, the storm would play itself out and he could contact someone for her. She certainly wasn't going anywhere in the PT Cruiser.

He helped her hold the glass so she could swallow three aspirin, then gently wiped the water from her chin.

"You need to rest," he said, his voice harsher than he intended. He had no patience for fools, especially when they endangered a baby. What had this woman been thinking? Where was she headed?

She looked at him, her pupils so large they seemed to blend with the irises. "Wait."

Shane stilled at the tiny note of panic in her whisper.

Now she would ask about the baby. Understandably, she'd be frantic.

"I….What happened?"

"You don't remember?" Shane quirked a skepticaleyebrow.

She shook her head, crying out at the pain the movement caused.

Shane held her chin with gentle, but firm fingers.

"You shouldn't move around."

"I forgot," she whispered.

Her chest rose and fell in swift, agitated movements, reminding Shane of the creamy swell of her breasts beneath the denim shirt. Disgusted with his thoughts,

Shane said gruffly, "You hit a tree down the road. Buck—my dog—found you."

At that moment, the baby uttered a high-pitched squeal of delight as Buck succeeded in knocking her over with his lascivious licks. Now she would freak and demand to see her baby so she could check every limb to her satisfaction—

But she didn't. Instead, she grabbed his sleeve and stared at him with huge, terrified eyes. Shane was surprised at the stark emotion on the woman's face. Surely she could hear the baby, know that it was all right?

Tears welled and spilled down her cheeks. She sought to control her breathing, but Shane saw it was a losing battle. He strongly suspected she was on the verge of a full-blown panic attack. "Don't worry, despite your reckless driving, your baby's all right."

"What baby?" she cried out suddenly, startling the baby, Buck, and Shane into complete silence.

"You don't re—?" Understanding hit Shane with the force of an avalanche, chilling his bones. "Just how much do you remember?"
