Zach Taylor and Claudia Stuart hate each other. Or do they? A five-year-long feud has kept them at arm's length, though each of them feels more than a little curiosity about the other. When a night of hard drinking and gambling leads to a shared bed - and a Vegas marriage - the two are forced to confront their feelings head on.

When it becomes necessary to maintain their charade of a marriage in order to discover the identity of a killer, neither Zach nor Claudia knows where it all will end.

Can passion tear down the wall between them before a power-hungry madman kills them both?

Excerpt:

They arrived at midnight with Zach and six other people. All Claudia wanted to do was find a room for the night. But, as usual, she allowed Zach to bait her.

"Just one slot. Play just one. I’ll even give you the dollar."

Anything to shut him up. She plopped the dollar in…and got a thousand back. The cocktail waitress brought one drink after another. She and Zach gambled…and kept winning. Champagne, wine, and beer mixed with lethal intensity.

Claudia let her head drop to her knees. A vague memory of one hell of a kiss with both of them plastered against the slot machine drifted into her foggy senses. A glint of gold and diamonds caught her eye. He’d even bought her a beautiful ring. It made no sense…any of it.

They despised each other. They always had. The constant sniping proved that. How in the world could they have gotten married?

Pounding at the bathroom door startled her from her thoughts. She tensed, afraid he might barge in.

"What do you want?" she shouted.

"I have to go to the bathroom," he snapped back.

"Can’t you wait?"

"You’ve been in here for half an hour already. I can’t wait much longer. If you don’t come out, I’m coming in…whether you like it or not. I’m giving you another five minutes."

Claudia balled her hands into fists and stood. It was going to be a long drive back to Twentynine Palms.

Staff Sergeant Rowan McKinley vowed never to see Captain Phillip Stuart again, but now she desperately needs his help. She's been charged with murder, and Philip’s the only one who can prove her innocent.

Phillip swore he’d never have anything to do with the one woman who broke his heart, yet how can he refuse her plea? Close quarters spark to life the love and passion each thought was gone, but any relationship between them is forbidden by military law.

Illicit desire is the least of Rowan’s worries, however. If they can’t catch the real killer she won’t be able to prove her innocence. If they do catch him, there’s still one other little problem – Philip doesn't know they have a son.

Excerpt:

Phillip. She had forgotten nothing about him. How could she when she lived with his image every day? The way the sun gleamed off his golden head, the ready smile, and his eyes.

God, those eyes! They could burn like quicksilver when his temper flared, or glow a soft, satiny gray when he made love.

She was probably a fool for contacting him after all these years. But there was no doubt she needed his help, and she would accept whatever consequences resulted from having him back in her life. Only Phillip could save her now. That is, if he accepted her request for his services.

The hallway door opened. The roar of the evaporative coolers lessened. A military policeman walked in and glared at her through the bars. "Your request for counsel has been expedited. They’re waiting for the captain to either accept or decline the case."

"How long will that take?" Rowan fought in vain to keep the quiver from her voice. "And when will I be able to contact my family?"

"You work in legal. You tell me." He lowered his voice. "Frankly, I hope you get what you deserve. He was a friend of mine, murderer."

He slammed the door on his exit, putting pressure back on the cooler. The roar this time was nothing compared to the pulse of blood in her ears.

"Yeah…he was mine, too," Rowan softly replied.

She tucked into the farthest corner of the cot, her despair as smothering as the walls surrounding her.

Excerpt:

He had only said a few words to her since their initial debriefing. And then he had only given her the bare minimum information to do her job. Gerri looked down at the newspaper article spread before of her.

The tears threatened again. How was she going to get through this? “Breathe deep child, we will get through this.” The words long forgotten echoed through her head. She smiled in spite of herself. Her Dad’s favorite saying to his head strong, impetuous daughter always had the power to calm her.

He’d always been there to ease her anxiousness. How she missed him. The last time she’d heard him utter that phrase had been during a time of great duress. She had gotten through it. He had not.

Gerri did as his words commanded; she breathed deep. Trying to concentrate on her work, she turned to the next newspaper article. At least this research pertained to war on the African continent in general. If he had requested her to research Zimbabwe, she would have packed up her things there and then and hightailed it out of the room. Her father was buried in that foreign land, along with the memories of the woman she used to be.

It still bothered her that she had been asked to do this research job in the first place. Her time in Zimbabwe, while not exactly a secret, wasn’t something that she advertised. The question of why would someone request her for this job lodged in the back of her mind. Gerri started as Roman backed through the door, using his back to push it open. Her first instinct was to rush over there and help him, but after her last comment, she had the impression that her assistance wouldn’t be appreciated. She feigned interest in the newspaper until he wheeled over the coffee trolley next to her desk.

“Here’s your coffee.” He handed it to her, and added a little awkwardly, “I found some biscuits and cake stashed at the back of the fridge. I thought you might be hungry.”

She smiled up at him as he passed her the coffee and she wished she hadn’t. She had effectively avoided looking directly at him since their initial meeting. He really was devastatingly handsome. The darkness of his brown eyes ignited sparks deep within her belly that had lain dormant for too long. Their renewed arousal made her feel uncomfortable. She squirmed and averted her eyes.

She hastily grabbed the coffee from him, spilling half of it all over the newspaper.

Instantly he was there at her side. He took the overly large white mug from her hand. “Did you burn yourself?”

Excerpt:

Although the two women thought they knew a great deal about my family, they had some of their facts wrong. My father did not write my mother’s name, or her lover’s, in blood. He simply shot her, wrote a note, and shot himself. My sister, Carmen, was not in a mental hospital. She was living in sunny California, and frequently visited a luxury spa in Palm Springs.

I had also been living in California until the murder/suicide, at which time I’d returned to Jessup. I intended to stay only long enough to settle my parents’ estate and tie up loose ends, but here it was nearly a year later, and I was still here. I’d given up a successful design business to stay in Jessup and take abuse from the townspeople.

Maybe what they said about my family being insane was true, because only a crazy person would have stayed here this long.

Eyes down, anxious to flee from Deanna’s not-so-subtle hostility, I grabbed the plastic bags from the counter and headed out of the store. I walked briskly toward my Jeep Cherokee, but before I made it, I collided with something large and solid, almost dropping the pie Brandon had given me.

“Oh, God, Isabelle, I’m sorry.” Sheriff Rick ‘Hutch’ Hutchings grabbed my upper arms to steady me, and I looked up and found myself staring into his eyes. Concern had darkened their silver hue to gunmetal grey. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine. It was my fault. I wasn’t paying attention.”

He studied me a moment then dropped his hands. He indicated his cruiser, which was parked near my jeep. “Damn thing won’t start. You’d think a county vehicle could get better maintenance than this, but I’ve had it in the shop twice this month.”

I nodded, not sure what kind of response that required. Hutch was wearing his uniform, including the hat that concealed most of his dark hair. He had a smudge of grease on one sleeve, and a bit on his cheek.

He took a rag from his back pocket and wiped at the grease on his hands, not very successfully. “Did I get any on you?” he asked, studying my torso for the effects of our collision.

“No, don’t think so. No big deal.”

“Good.” He smiled. “I haven’t seen you around much lately. How have you been?”

I shifted uneasily, adjusting the grocery bags in my arms. Every time I saw him, which fortunately wasn’t often, I thought about our past, about how things had been between us when we were both much too young to know anything about life, or love.

I looked away, afraid he could read the emotion in my eyes. “I’m fine.”

“Here, let me get those bags for you.”

I stepped back and shook my head. “No, I’ve got them. Thanks, though. See you around.”

I carried my bags to the jeep, threw them inside, and drove out of the parking lot, tempted to take the highway that led out of Jessup to freedom. Freedom from the gossip, freedom from the lingering attraction I felt for Hutch, and freedom from the strange hold this town had on me.

She has worked hard to overcome the anguish of betrayal and the devastation it wreaked in her family's lives, and she's now close to realizing her dreams. There simply isn't a place in this equation for emotional entanglements, especially not with Nic Sinclaire, the only man who has the ability to breach her defenses.

From their first encounter, an impossible chemistry rages between them a crackling heat that threatens to melt the ice surrounding her. A bizarre twist makes Nic a constant companion and self-appointed protector. As Bo's barriers shift and crumble, she can no longer ignore the powerful emotions his proximity evokes.

Excerpt:

He looked suddenly thoughtful. Still angry, no, very angry, but with a gleam of underlying speculation that should have been a warning on its own. But she hadn’t expected him to agree with her and the momentary surprise proved a dangerous distraction. “But maybe there’s a way we can settle this once and for all.”

“Really? Just like that?” Deliberately mocking. Even false bravado, maybe. But only cold amusement showed. She was bouncing back.

“Just like that. I can prove that I’m right.”

“Sure you can. And I’m Dick Whittington’s cat. You might as well—”

Bo never got to finish the sentence. His hands were hard on her shoulders, painful, his lips bruising and punishing and demanding. And relentless in their determination to conquer and control. Her protest cut short, Bo could only push and flail helplessly against his unyielding chest and the iron bands of his arms.

Angry, a little desperate, she continued to fight, struggling to free herself, to escape the callous demands of his kiss. Then, realising at last that resistance was futile, she stopped, forced herself into stone-like unresponsiveness. But, instead of the hoped-for freedom, it only made things worse.

With a soft, triumphant groan he pulled her even closer, his kiss deepening, teasing even, as his hand slid beneath her shirt to play hot and tantalising up and down her spine.

Even as her mind screamed a warning, Bo felt her resolve dissolving, felt herself slipping into a place beyond time and reason, where nothing seemed to matter except the burning, aching need to consume and be consumed. The rush and the heat and sheer abandon of it had her clinging to him, responding to him, her whole body moulding itself into his so that his strength was the only thing that kept her standing.

When Nic finally lifted his head, both of them were breathless, bemused, like travellers from another time finding themselves in strange, uncharted territory.

“The defence rests,” he said softly, his eyes holding hers, reading the desire that she couldn’t have hidden, even if she’d had the wits to think it. His voice rasped rough, raw with an emotion that frightened and excited, and seemed to speak more than his look ever could. “I think that effectively proves my point, don’t you?”

Then he was gone without even so much as a backward glance, releasing her so abruptly that Bo had to clutch onto the nearby table to steady herself. She felt weak, shaken, appalled by her reaction and the awful realisation that something—something huge and hungry and wilful—had been roused within her. What frightened her the most was that she had never even guessed that it was there.

Excerpt:

The crimson-black stain spread from the woman’s head wound and ended unevenly in the center of her blonde hair. It would almost look as if she'd been interrupted in the midst of a bad dye job, except she was lying face down, leaching more of the dark blood into the supple leather of the cream-colored sofa.

Detective Samantha Colby bent closer, trying to see the victim’s face without touching the body. She couldn’t. Nor could she see signs of any other injuries. Not that any were needed. The bloody gavel lying on the floor next to the corpse had been more than sufficient.

Sam rose and blew out a breath, resisting the urge to remove her jacket. The heat was oppressive, unusual for Cincinnati, even in July. The sweltering temperatures magnified the smell of decay, not something one would expect to encounter in a five million-dollar mansion. CSI techs wandered in and out of the room, cameras flashing, baggies opening and closing as evidence was neatly secured.

Sam’s olive shell, minus the navy blazer, would be much cooler attire, but it would probably show her armpit stains. It wasn’t the image a ‘together’ homicide detective should present.

She turned to the uniform, Walburn, and said, “Got an ID on the vic?”

His eyes glittered with excitement. “It’s not confirmed, but the house belongs to Mona Morrison.” He watched Sam expectantly.

“Mona Morrison?” Sam lifted a brow.

“You know, Judge Mona.”

She’d heard of Judge Mona, although she’d never watched her program. Judge Mona was a television judge who tried ‘real’ cases in front of millions of people.

Great. If the dead woman turned out to be Judge Mona Morrison, this was going to be one of those high profile cases with the captain demanding it be solved yesterday.
